Pool backfill dirt comes from one of two places: material already on your property (crushed pool rubble and excavated soil), or fill trucked in from a quarry or approved fill supplier once the on-site material runs short. Most Hunter region pool removals use a mix of both, and the split matters because imported fill is the single most common reason a backfilling quote comes in higher than a homeowner expected. This guide explains where the dirt in your backfill actually comes from, what it costs, and the questions worth asking before a contractor books a delivery.

The Two Sources of Pool Backfill
On-site material. In a concrete pool removal, the broken shell itself is often crushed and seated in the base of the void, reducing how much has to be trucked in from elsewhere. Excavated soil from around the pool edges, where it’s clean and free of organic matter, can sometimes be reused the same way. Reusing on-site material is cheaper for two reasons: there’s nothing to buy, and there’s less to cart in either direction, since material that would otherwise need disposal instead does useful work in the hole.
Imported fill. Once on-site material is exhausted, or where there wasn’t much usable rubble to begin with (a fibreglass or vinyl pool removal, for instance, produces far less demolition material than a concrete one), the rest of the void is filled with material bought in specifically for the job. This typically comes from a local quarry, a civil works supplier, or a demolition and recycling yard, and it’s the fill that actually shows up as a line item on your invoice.
Where Imported Fill Physically Comes From
Most imported pool backfill in the Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and Maitland area is sourced from one of a handful of supply chains:
- Quarries, supplying virgin excavated natural material (VENM), crushed sandstone or road base products purpose-made for compaction.
- Demolition and recycling yards, supplying crushed recycled concrete, which compacts well and is often the most cost-effective option where the pool’s own rubble doesn’t stretch far enough.
- Civil and earthworks sites, supplying excavated natural material (ENM), soil excavated from other construction sites that has been tested and classified as suitable clean fill under NSW EPA rules before it’s allowed to leave the site it came from.
Not every clean-looking pile of dirt is legally fine to bring onto your property. Fill has to be genuinely uncontaminated and, depending on its origin, properly classified before it’s reused as backfill. What Pool Backfill Dirt Costs
Fill pricing in the Hunter region is generally quoted per cubic metre or per truckload (a standard tipper typically carries around 10-12 cubic metres), and the figures below are indicative only, always confirmed against your contractor’s actual supplier pricing at the time of quoting.

Why the Same Size Pool Can Have Very Different Fill Costs
Two pools of similar size can end up with quite different backfill costs, and it’s rarely because someone is being overcharged. The most common reasons:
- Construction type. A concrete pool generates its own rubble, which can be crushed and reused in the base, cutting the volume of fill that needs to be bought in. A fibreglass or vinyl pool produces almost nothing usable, so nearly the entire void has to be filled with imported material.
- Full versus partial removal. A partial fill-in leaves the lower shell in place, meaning there’s simply less void to fill than a full removal of the same footprint, so it needs less material even before cost per cubic metre comes into it.
- Access. Fill has to get from a truck on the street into the actual hole. Good drive-in access means a truck tips close to the void; a tight side path or a sloping block means fill is barrowed, conveyed or moved by smaller machine, and that handling time is priced on top of the material cost itself.
- Whether you’re planning to build. Fill destined for a future slab or footing is often specified as a higher-grade, more consistently compactable material (road base or virgin quarry fill) rather than the cheaper recycled option, because the fill needs to meet a documented compaction standard. Questions Worth Asking Your Contractor
- Will crushed pool rubble be reused in the base, or does all of it leave the site?
- What fill material is being specified, and is it VENM, ENM, or recycled concrete?
- Is fill cost quoted per cubic metre, or bundled into a flat backfill price?
- Is there an access surcharge for getting fill from the truck into the hole?
- If I might build over this area later, does the fill specification already account for that, or would it need to be redone?
Getting clear answers to these before work starts avoids the two most common backfill surprises: paying for a fill grade you didn’t need, or discovering after the fact that a cheaper fill won’t support the shed or extension you had planned.
Pool Backfill Dirt: FAQs
Can I supply my own fill dirt to save money? Sometimes, but it has to meet the same clean fill requirements as anything a contractor would bring in, and most contractors will want to inspect or test it before accepting it into the job. Ask early, since a rejected delivery on the day can cost more in delay than it saves.
Is recycled crushed concrete as good as quarry fill? For most residential lawn and garden reinstatement, yes, and it’s typically the cheaper option. Where you’re planning to build over the area, your contractor or engineer may specify a higher-grade material instead, so it’s worth flagging future plans before fill is ordered.
Why did my neighbour’s similar-sized pool cost less to backfill? Usually one of the factors above: a concrete pool that generated its own base rubble, a partial rather than full removal, easier access for the delivery trucks, or a lower fill grade because no future building was planned. Two pools that look alike on the surface can need genuinely different amounts and types of fill.
